Joseph -

The index page has 1 H1 tag per blog post. Each blog post is actually it's own page that is partially shown on the index. The title of each blog post is the H1 tag that you're seeing. When you are on the actual blog post page, there is only 1 H1 tag (except for this page, where there are two, one of which is used for demonstrative purposes in the middle of the blog post).

On a regular webpage on a website, only 1 H1 tag should be used. This post will be revisted and updated shortly since it is about two years old. You can subscribe by RSS to be alerted when the new post goes up!

I'm a little confused. Why then does your page have 11 H1 tags and 1 h2 tag?

Thanks for the advise. I would agree with everything you said but I think the h1 tag in your last comment wouldn't get you anything worthwhile unless your keyword targets are maybe "ING" or "Insurance Options". I rather put my h1 tags more targeted to the main keyword targets for the page and the h2 for the secondary keyword targets. I regularly use more than one h2 tag depending on the page content.

One particular interesting note from the W3C: "Some people consider skipping heading levels to be bad practice. They accept H1 H2 H1 while they do not accept H1 H3 H1 since the heading level H2 is skipped."

http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/global.html

Which seems to suggest search engines, "some people", will recognize heading tags other than h1,h2,h3 so long as you don't skip any. That's 100% speculation and I have no evidence to justify it either way yet. Just some info I thought I'd share.

Dear David,

Sry I didn't respond sooner. I hope you find this comment.

To answer your questions:

If you have a page on Insurance and the page is a general page about all the types of insurance offered, you will want your meta keywords tag to have all the forms of insurance. Try not to place more than 5 keywords in this meta tag.

Your title tag could be:

ING Insurance | Home Insurance, Life Insurance, & Pension Funds

The title tag shouldn't be too long, but you might be able to place these three insurance options in there.

Your h1 tag could be:

About ING Insurance Options

Only have one h2. Your h2 can be:

Home Insurance, Life Insurance, & Pension Funds

After your h1 and h2, have a paragraph describing what information can be found on the page. Then use h3 tags as headers to the different sections on the page. For example, one h3 tag can be:

Home Insurance

Under this h3 tag you will have the information about home insurance. These sections can be small and give links to main pages about each insurance option. The home insurance section can be a one to two paragraph snippet with a link to page just about home insurance. This will give you more room for your SEO and help you list better in the SERPs for Home Insurance.

I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I think this article is so great. A real example is w3schools website Which is a tutorial based website. It is number 1 for php tutorial , asp tutorial ,javascript tutorial and so more. I like www.php.net/docs.php for php tutorial but w3schools is great and using the best of title tag, heading tag , bold tag , repeating keywords in navigation and silent keyword repeating in body text and make w3schools number one in seo over the years. I think they actually shows how to use title tag, heading tag, bold tag, and sound keyword repeating to be number one in for certain keywords in SERPS.

Ohai! I'm currently optimizing the keywords, title, header tags and have a few questions. If my business is INSURANCE and have as products HOME INSURANCE LIFE INSURANCE, PENSION FUNDS.

Then:
In INSURANCE page I should place:
keywords: ING, HOME INSURANCE, LIFE INSURANCE, PENSION FUNDS.
title: ING INSURANCE
h1: ING INSURANCE
h2: HOME INSURANCE
h2: LIFE INSURANCE
h2: PENSION FUNDS
h3: variations of products listed above

And in HOME INSURANCE page I should place:
keywords: ING, HOME INSURANCE, LIFE INSURANCE, PENSION FUNDS.
title: ING HOME INSURANCE
h1: ING HOME INSURANCE
h2: Guarantees
h3: ?????

Did I made a right SEO keyword,h1/2,title usage?
